Diabetes Prevention at GNSG – Sunday May 6th 2012

This Sunday, learn how to reduce your risk of diabetes or help manage diabetes. Volunteers from the Canadian Diabetes Association and health specialists, Nutritionalists and others will be on hand at the Gurdwara Sahib to educate the Sangat.

Come join us from 10am onwards to interact and learn more about this health issue that affects many in our community. During the morning program an interactive presentation will also be shared with Sangat from the Darbar Hall.

You’re invited to experience an evening showcasing Youth Leaders sharing their vision for the future of our community.

We hope to see you on this special evening at the GNSG Seniors Center (122 St building at Surrey Gurdwara), on Thursday May 3rd at 6pm to take part in presentations by guest speakers and youth that have just completed this course.

The Leaders of the Future Performance Program is a “New” course based on Toastmasters International providing students a platform to express themselves focusing on their speaking, leading and listening skills while increasing interest and involvement in civic activities.

Operation Teddy Bear

Take part in the Community Initiative to purchase bears for children who are residents of Canuck Place and B.C Children’s Hospital and Ronald McDonald House.

As many of you know, when kids are scared and going through painful medical procedures, it’s not always easy to share with others. But a teddy bear is someone they can whisper their pains and fears to without worrying about judgement or causing anyone any pain. A teddy bear keeps all secrets.

The local Community of Surrey, is coming together with friends and family to donate funds to purchase these bears which will be given to the kids in early May.

When we heard about this project at Guru Nanak Gurdwara, we thought, what a wonderful way to help uplift kids who are carrying such heavy burdens.

The Gurdwara Sahib would like to reach out to our friends and family. We really hope you can all help. We know the Sangat and the Sikh Community, have such huge hearts. There is no minimum or maximum amounts. Whatever you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Free Tax Returns at GNSG

Sevadaars will be present on Sundays until the end of April from 10am to 3pm in room 209 in the GNSG Ragi Wing Building.

Feeding Those In Need

As spring arrives in the Lower Mainland, so does our need to help those who are less fortunate. In this spirit, the community is encouraged to take part in the collecting of food items for the 1st Annual Seva Community Food Drive, organized by the Sikh Seva Foundation in association with Food Banks BC. This is a perfect time to look through our food cupboards and donate non-perishable goods – such as canned fruits, canned vegetables and beans, peanut butter, jelly, pastas and sauces to help out with this important volunteer mission.

Drop off food items to the Langar Hall of Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara or other Gurdwara’s in the Lower Mainland.

This food drive will run for the entire month of April. Food items can be dropped off at any one of the Sikh Gurdwaras in the Lower Mainland. Greatest needs for this year’s drive will be baby formula, cereals, rice, pasta and sauces in sealed, non-glass packages. These staples help young families with basic dietary needs.

“We feel so honoured to see the community taking part in such a fundamental project. Food is energy, food is love and food gives hope to those who face challenges in providing nourishment to their families, seniors and others who cannot afford the basics. It is great to see the community stepping up their efforts this year to meet these challenges, to help others and to show how much they care about one another,” states an organizer from Sikh Seva Foundation.

“I feel this is so important. Everyday I see people in need and I want to help. This is something I can do,” explains a youth volunteer. “Collecting food for others is just my small way of supporting the community. Everyone should help if they are able to. Whatever you donate, will be helpful.”

About the Sikh Seva Foundation

The Sikh Seva Foundation is a community driven initiative focusing on volunteering today to help give hope for tomorrow. Our goal is not to have any one person lead or direct; it is to have the entire community work to improve conditions for everyone. The purpose of Sikh Seva Foundation is to be a volunteer bank resource for a wide range of charities throughout the Lower Mainland.
