September 9, 2010 – The Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Society hosted two major events over the Labour Day weekend as part of their Sports Tournament. On September 4-5, a Kabaddi Tournament took place, with the finals taking place in the evening of the 5th. Other sporting events also present were: Wrestling, Volleyball, Weight lifting, and Tug-o-War. In addition, the 8th Annual International Sikh Martial Arts Tournament, known as Yudh Gatka Competition, took place on September 6th.
The events were well attended by families, with estimates as high as 10,000 visitors over the weekend. The events were well received by the public, as one attendee remarked, “these events are great for the community, the Society has done a great job organizing the events”. Others remarked at the inclusion of the Yudh Gatka Competion, “the Gatka competition was quite new and exciting,” he continued, “we usually just come for the Kabaddi Tournament, and decided to check out the Gatka competition as well.”
The Yudh Gatka Competition featured an international roster of competitors, ranging from locals in the Surrey to others from other parts of Canada, the USA, UK, and India, among others. It is an international tournament in its 9th year.
For the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Society, the Kabaddi and Gatka tournaments are an important aspect of promoting physical fitness, well being and social programs. As Bikramjit Singh Sandhar, Society President, remarked, “the Sports Tournament was an important opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate physical fitness,” he continued, “the community has a good time but it is important for us to integrate physical activities into our personal lives as well.”
